Planning Your Skydive Jump
What should I wear for my skydive?
Your clothing for skydiving should be comfortable and loose-fitting. Athletic wear or activewear items like track suit, yoga pants, or t-shirts are our first choices for what to wear skydiving when the weather is nice. Jeans are not the most comforta
How far is Skydive Front Royal from Washington, DC?
Not far at all! Front Royal is about 70 miles west of the capital. Our town is right off I-66, with our DZ being about 15 minutes from the exit.
What are your hours of operation?
Our season runs annually from mid-March to mid-November. We take reservations from 8 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week.
Where can I park?
Parking is a breeze and it’s free. Look for any spot open in front of the airport terminal building.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
We jump from sun-up to sundown, so as long as there is still hope in the forecast, we’ll wait for a break in the weather. If it looks like the clouds/rain/wind are not going to let up, we’ll reschedule your jump for as soon as possible. Unfortunately we don’t offer refunds for weather cancelations.
Can I reschedule my jump?
We understand things come up last minute. If you have to reschedule your jump just give us a call 48 hours in advanced and we’ll swap you out for a better day/time. If it’s a last minute thing, we do charge $25 (per person) to reschedule your jump. There’s a lot of people involved in making your jump a success – so please just communicate with us and everyone stays happy.
What if I don't show up?
Barring some catostrophic emergency like aliens/torndaoes/volcanoes, you’re out whatever money you put down. Again, please just communicate with us ahead of time.
Requirements for Skydiving near Washington D.C.
How old do you have to be to go skydiving?
The United States Parachuting Association mandates that all tandem students must be 18 years old in order to participate in a parachute jump. No exceptions! Please bring a valid photo ID as proof of your date of birth.
Is there a maximum age for tandem skydiving?
What’s that old saying? Age is just a number! So long as you are fit enough to carry out your responsibilities as a tandem student we are happy to take you on a skydive. Be aware – If you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, chronic pain or other medical conditions, you may want to check with the doc first before booking your skydive. Always better safe than sorry!
What’s the weight limit?
Tandem students must be 250 lbs or less in order to make a skydive. Your height to weight proportions are also important in making sure the tandem harness fits properly for your jump. An additional fee may be applied for guests over 200 lbs. Each guest is subject to being weighed, fully clothed and with shoes on, at our facility prior to the skydive. Above all else, safety first.
Planning for Jump Day
What’s the best time to skydive?
We recommend booking the earliest availability possible on the day you wish to jump. Weather can be unpredicatable, so the earlier you arrive, the better your odds are that there will be a “window” of time favorable for jumping.
How far in advance should I make my reservation?
We generally have weekday openings if you book within a few days. Weekends can book up earlier though so we recommend booking at least 1 week out if possible. If you are hoping to sneak in a same-day booking, just call us direct to see if we have availability.
What time should I arrive for my jump?
Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled “jump time.”
How long will I be at the DZ?
Our goal is to get you in a plane and skydiving within 2 hours of your arrival time. That being said, we will never risk your safety if the conditions are not just right for jumping. Weather can be unpredictable, so its best to consider skydiving an all-day affair. Bring some drinks, snacks and a good book. Our team will always do our best to communicate with you and update you on changes in timing, but ultimately we can’t control the weather. Oh how we wish we could!
Can I be in the airplane together with my friends?
Our airplane can take a max of 2 customers simultaneously, so it can be you + 1 friend, each with your tandem instructors. Oh, and of course the pilot!
What should I do with my hair?
During freefall the wind is in your face… and you hair. If you have long hair and don’t want it to be in a “nest” when you land, we recommend a good pony tail or braids to keep things in check.
Can I wear my glasses or contacts skydiving?
Absolutely! You will be outfitted with goggles that will cover your eyes and glasses completely. Plus, it’s important that you can SEE your skydive adventure with us.
Should I eat and drink before my jump?
Yup! It’s not surgery – it’s skydiving! Just don’t overdo it either way and you’ll be just fine. Also, no drunk-diving or under-the-influence antics will be tolerated. If we suspect you’ve been boozing beforehand, you won’t be able to jump AND you’ll lose any payments or deposits.
What should I bring?
Bring your government ID, your payment method, snacks, drink, a good book, and a positive attitude.
Can my family and friends watch me jump?
Of course! The excitement of a dropzone is enjoyable even for those who stick to the ground. With planes taking off and parachutes soaring through the air, the “dropzone vibe” is enjoyable for everyone.
Safety and Specifics
Is skydiving safe?
Tandem skydiving is an extremely safe, well-regulated recreational activity. In fact, your drive to the dropzone is loaded with much more risk than your parachuting adventure!
What is the United States Parachute Association (USPA)?
The USPA (United States Parachute Association) is the organization that regulates most of the dropzones in the United States (including ours). They work closely with the FAA to create rules and guidelines so that students have the safest, most enjoyable experience possible both in the plane and in the sky.
Who will I jump with?
You will jump with a USPA licenced tandem instructor.
What height will I jump from?
We will jump up to 2 miles high.
How fast will I fall?
During freefall you will reach a maximum speed of around 120 – 130 mph
Can you breathe in freefall?
Of course! There’s plenty of fresh air all around you during your jump. If you feel yourself getting nervous, remember to take lots of calm deep breaths and remember that tandem skydiving is EXTREMELY safe. Once you are out of that plane and into the freefall part, your nerves will likely melt away and you will enjoy the experience.
Memories For A Lifetime
Should I get the video and/or pictures?
We highly recommend getting video or stills of your jump at Skydive Front Royal. Videos and pics are a wonderful way to relive your jump over and over again and share your experience with friends and family. Rewatching your experience is sure to put that exhilerating smile back on your face, long after your jump day is over.
Can I wear my own GoPro or camera during my jump?
USPA policy states that only jumpers with 200+ skydives are able to wear a GoPro.
Can my friends share my video?
We love when you share your skydiving adventures with friends and family! If you had a good experience, make sure to name-drop SFR and send them our way for their own jump!
